Throughout our Cybersecurity Awareness Month focus, we are continually educating businesses on the importance of prioritising employee education as well as technical defences.

By now, you should well aware of the steps you should be taking to protect your business. Our cybersecurity services offer everything from multi-factor authentication and data backups to Cyber Essentials and penetration testing but there is still much that you can do to strengthen your defences.

In our opinion, too often, businesses in Ipswich are failing to invest in training and education to empower their staff to understand the purpose of IT policies and protocols.

That’s why we use our website to share insights and information to simplify IT support and cybersecurity services for businesses like you across Ipswich, Colchester and Felixstowe.

The scale of the employee cybersecurity problem.

We regularly tell businesses like you that most hackers are able to gain access to businesses due to human errors.

Earlier this year, Verizon revealed in their 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report that “More than two-thirds (68%) of breaches involve a non-malicious human element.” This could be down to a human error, or a victim falling to a phishing scam or malicious email.

It’s interesting to note that the statistics have remained consistent over the last few years.

Back in 2020, a survey from the Wall Street Journal revealed that 70% of companies felt that their employees could be their biggest cybersecurity threat. While a proportion of the WSJ’s study was focused on whistle-blowers and staff members who could be deliberately leaking sensitive information, it has been proven that most cyberattacks occur due to employee errors.

The good news is that Verizon’s 2024 report shows that there is a clear improvement in reporting practices. It states “20% of users identified and reported phishing in simulation engagements, and 11% of users who clicked the email also reported it.”

However, while this is good news, there is still more work to be done. Individuals need to feel empowered that they can report anything that they feel may have been suspicious. For some, it could be about knowing that they can admit to errors without worrying about the consequences. For others, it could be about recognising the importance of cybersecurity throughout the business.

This is why we recently published our article, “I think I’ve been hacked…what do I do?”

We want to empower businesses in the region, from Colchester all the way to Norwich to feel that they are in a position to help their employees recognise when and where issues may arise. Internal IT managers might release IT policies or procedures, but it’s essential to invest in training and education so that all workers understand why those policies are in place.

If your business has implemented hybrid or remote working, you need to take steps to ensure that your policies remain in place regardless of whether individuals are working in the office or from home.
